INTRODUCTION

Universities in India are recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), which draws its power from the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.

Types Of Universities

In the Indian higher education system, universities are categorised into four types. These are

central universities

state universities

deemed universities and

private universities.

This categorisation is based on the power provided by the type of government . Here is the brief description of types of universities and there numbers in India 2020.

Central Universities Or Union Universities-

As per the latest report of the University Grants Commission UGC June 2020 number of Central universities in India are 53 and are set up by an act of Parliament. The President of India is a visitor at all central universities. The UGC is the agency that provides funding for maintenance and development of these universities.

State Universities-

State universities are established by the state government of each of the states and territories of India, under the state or local parliament act. As per the latest report of June 2020 of UGC, 412 state universities are present in India.

Deemed University-

Deemed University, or “Deemed-to-be-University”, is a status of autonomy granted by the Department of Higher Education on the advice of the UGC, under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956. Deemed to be Universities enjoy full autonomy or independence in deciding courses, syllabus, admissions and fees. Some Deemed to be Universities can also grant degrees on their own. Deemed-to-be Universities, which continue to perform well, can get the status of a full-fledged University. As per the latest report of UGC on June 2020, there are 124 Deemed universities in India.

Private Universities-

As per the latest report of UGC number of private universities in India are 356. A private university is an institution of higher learning established through a state or central act by a sponsoring body, such as a society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.  Private universities in India works under the UGC (Establishment and Maintenance of Standards in Private Universities) Regulations, 2003.
