Unlike every other unit in Paper 1, Reading Comprehension isn’t about memorising facts — it’s a skill unit. The good news is that with the right approach, it’s one of the most improvable sections in the entire exam, since your score depends almost entirely on technique and practice, not prior knowledge.

Question Types You’ll Encounter

NET Paper 1 comprehension passages typically generate five recurring question types:

• Main idea questions — asking what the passage is fundamentally about.
• Inference questions — asking what can be reasonably concluded, even though it isn’t directly stated.
• Vocabulary-in-context questions — asking what a specific word or phrase means as used in the passage.
• Detail/factual recall questions — asking about a specific fact stated in the passage.
• Tone/purpose questions — asking about the author’s attitude or intent.

Reading Strategy: SQ3R Approach

A widely recommended strategy is Survey (skim the passage first for structure), Question (predict what will be asked), Read (read carefully, noting key points), Recite (mentally summarise each paragraph), and Review (check your understanding against the questions). This structured approach beats reading passively and re-reading multiple times.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The most frequent error is choosing an option that is factually true in the real world but not actually supported by the passage — NET comprehension questions test what the passage says, not general knowledge. Another common mistake is over-relying on memory instead of quickly re-scanning the passage to verify an answer.

Building Speed Under Exam Conditions

Since Paper 1 has a strict one-hour time limit for 50 questions, spending more than 4-5 minutes per comprehension passage (including its questions) can hurt your overall score. Timed practice with varied passage topics — policy, science, education, environment — builds both speed and adaptability.
