UGC NET Paper 1 Unit 4: Communication — Notes

Communication is a compact but scoring unit that examines how information is exchanged between individuals and groups — and what can go wrong along the way. Since communication underpins the entire teaching-learning process, this unit connects closely with Teaching Aptitude as well.

The Communication Cycle

Communication follows a basic cycle: sender → message → channel → receiver → feedback. The sender encodes an idea into a message, transmits it through a channel, and the receiver decodes and interprets it — with feedback confirming whether the message was understood correctly, making communication a two-way process.

Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication

Verbal communication uses spoken or written words, while non-verbal communication conveys meaning through facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, and body posture — often carrying as much weight as the words themselves, especially in a classroom setting.

Interpersonal, Group, and Mass Communication

Interpersonal communication happens between two individuals; group communication involves a small, defined set of people working toward a shared goal; and mass communication reaches a large, dispersed audience simultaneously through media like television, radio, or newspapers.

Classroom Communication

Effective classroom communication is interactive rather than one-directional — involving questioning, feedback, and both verbal and non-verbal exchange between teacher and students, not just lecture delivery.

Barriers to Effective Communication

Common barriers include physical barriers (noise, distance), semantic barriers (jargon, language differences), and psychological barriers (assumptions, emotional states, or misreading a listener’s intent). Recognising these barriers is often exactly what NET questions test.
