UGC NET Paper 1 Unit 1: Teaching Aptitude — Notes

Teaching Aptitude is the first and one of the most scoring units in UGC NET Paper 1. It evaluates how well a candidate understands teaching as a structured, purposeful activity — not just the delivery of information, but a process shaped by the teacher, the learner, and the environment together.

Concept and Objectives of Teaching

Teaching is a tripolar process involving the teacher, the learner, and the content, with the goal of bringing about desired behavioural and cognitive change in the learner. Its objectives go beyond information transfer to include developing understanding, critical thinking, and practical skills relevant to the learner’s growth.

Levels of Teaching

Herbert’s model identifies three levels of teaching, each building on the previous one:

• Memory Level — focuses on rote learning, drill, and repetition so learners can recall facts accurately.
• Understanding Level — goes beyond recall to grasping relationships between facts and generalising principles.
• Reflective Level — the highest level, where learners apply knowledge independently, think critically, and solve novel problems.

Learner’s Characteristics

Effective teaching accounts for the academic, social, emotional, and cognitive characteristics of learners, along with individual differences in ability, motivation, and learning pace — particularly important when teaching adolescent and adult learners in higher education.

Factors Affecting Teaching

Teaching effectiveness is shaped by several interacting factors: the teacher’s competence and communication skill, the learner’s readiness and background, the quality of support material and instructional facilities, the learning environment, and the institution’s overall academic culture.

Methods of Teaching in Higher Education

Teaching methods in higher education are broadly classified as teacher-centered (lecture-based) versus learner-centered (discussion, project-based), and offline versus online (including platforms like SWAYAM, SWAYAM PRABHA, and MOOCs). Modern teaching increasingly blends these approaches to maximise engagement and outcomes.

Evaluation Systems

Evaluation in higher education includes formative and summative assessment, the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), computer-based testing, and ongoing innovations such as continuous and comprehensive evaluation — all aimed at measuring learning more holistically than a single final exam.
